In Support Of A Latino Community Task Force

On August 1, 2022, the Richmond League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) proposed the formation of a Latino Community Task Force. You can read their full statement here, or the overview provided in the Richmond Times Dispatch, here.

To show our support for this commission, Kids First RPS sent the following letter to the School Board:

School Board Chair Dr. Harris-Muhammed, Vice Chair Gibson, and Honorable Members of the RPS School Board -

We are writing tonight to express support of the proposal of the Richmond Chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens to establish a Commission on the Status of Latino Students in Richmond Public Schools.

Latino students are the fastest growing population within RPS. These students and families face a variety of specific challenges that should be named and addressed with adequate and appropriate resources. We believe this Commission can be a constructive vehicle for addressing the needs of Latino students and families, ultimately improving outcomes for all RPS students. We also believe this is a tremendous opportunity to engage with the Latino community in ways that support Priority 1 of RPS's strategic plan - Exciting and Rigorous Teaching and Learning.

We are hopeful that the School Board will support this proposal and we look forward to supporting the ongoing work of the Commission.

Thank you,

KidsFirst RPS
